MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition CD-ROM CONTENTS ============================================================== This CD-ROM contains : 1. Altera MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition Software Development Tools. 2. Altera Digital Library. 3. (Optional) Design Examples provided in conjunction with a Textbook. There will be separate instructions specific to their usage. The MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition Software is a SUPERSET of the MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Baseline product. The additional features included in the Student Edition are enabled using a License File obtained from the Altera University Program web-site, NOT from the MAX+PLUS II Baseline licensing site. To use the additional features, the correct license file must be obtained. During the operation, the student edition tools with report as the Baseline product, this is normal and to be expected. The license file controls the available features. Failure to follow the student edition instructions for installation and licensing as described in this file may result in incomplete licensing of the available student edition features. Installing and Running the MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition Software --------------------------------------------------------------------- Please read carefully the following instructions before installing the MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition software. Minimum System Requirements ----------------------------------------------------------- To install and use the software, the computer must meet or exceed the following specifications. Operating System: MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition can be installed on computers running Microsoft Windows 95, Windows 98, or Windows NT (3.51 or 4.0). The software will not work with Windows 3.1. Hard Drive: MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition software requires approximately 80 Mbytes of available hard drive space for installation. Additional drive space may be required for projects. Memory: MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition software requires a minimum of 48 Mbytes of available memory, i.e., combined physical RAM and virtual (swap disk) memory. At least 16 Mbytes should be physical RAM to provide acceptable performance. If problems in starting the software are experienced, try increasing the amount of virtual memory swap space available to the Microsoft Windows operating system. Refer to the Windows operating system documentation for instructions on how to increase the available virtual memory. It may also be necessary to add additional physical RAM to the system. Installation from the CD-ROM --------------------------------------- The MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition software can be installed by running the command :\MP2_92SE.exe The setup program will guide you through the installation process. After the setup program has copied all needed files from the CD-ROM to the computer's hard drive, the setup program will automatically exit. ******* DO NOT START MAX+PLUS II YET ******* ********************************************** IMPORTANT: PATCH UPDATE ********************************************** After installation is complete, copy the file :\vhd.dll to the directory where the student edition was installed. This patch is required for proper VHDL design entry. ********************************************** IMPORTANT: Read the Following Very Carefully ********************************************** The MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition software has optional features that are enabled by a "License File." Before the software can be used, your unique License File must be obtained from Altera. By following the procedure described below a License File that enables all of the features of MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition can be obtained. Obtaining your MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition License File ------------------------------------------------------------- The first time you start MAX+PLUS II on your computer the software will display a window titled "MAX+PLUS II Copy Protection." This window will ask you the following question: "Would you like information on how to obtain a free MAX+PLUS II Baseline license?" ***** ANSWER "NO" ****** The MAX+PLUS II Baseline configuration does NOT include all of the features available in the student edition software. To obtain your MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition License File, go to the following URL on the World Wide Web: http://www.altera.com/maxplus2-student The procedure for obtaining a License File is given on the WEB page. As part of the procedure you will asked to provide the serial number of the hard drive on which you have installed MAX+PLUS II. To obtain this serial number: 1. Start MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition 2. In MAX+PLUS II, click on the Options menu. 3. In the Options menu click on License Setup 4. In the window that opens click on "System Info." 5. The hard drive serial number is then displayed. You can start the MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition software as you would any Windows program, by using the Windows Start button. The MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition software appears in the Programs menu as "MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Baseline." As explained above, the word "Baseline" refers to a particular licensed configuration of MAX+PLUS II software. The student edition software includes all the features of the Baseline configuration plus some important additional features. Once the required information is provided, a file will be e-mailed to you to the e-mail address given with the licensing information and instructions on using the License File. The e-mail is normally returned in less than one hour. Once the License File is enabled, the software is ready to use. Altera's MAX+PLUS II 9.23 Student Edition READ.ME ========================================= Once you have installed and started MAX+PLUS II, extensive on-line Help is available under the Help menu. Also under the Help menu is a read.me file that provides additional, late-breaking information.
